Rev. Dr. Br. Nicholas Verouven
About Founder
Rev. Dr. Br. Nicholas Verouven, the founder of St. Joseph’s Hospital was a perfect blend of mysticism, philanthropic and professionalism in his persona. These values of Christ reflected in his services always as a result, he was awarded by two Maharajas (Kings) of Travancore and Kochi. Actually the friendship of the Carmelites with the Travancore Royal Family began during the reign of the Lithuanian Carmelite Missionary Bishop Florence of Jesus of Nazareth OCD (1710-1773) whom Maharajah Rama Varma visited at Verapoly in 1761 and impressed by his holy personality relieved the Roman Catholics of his kingdom from all kinds of Taxes. Br Dr Nicolaus could revive and continue this friendship of the Royal family through his merciful personality and medical genie. The medicines called Droamar, Carmelite drops and Scala were his contributions to the medical world of his time.
ST. Josephs Hospital
Action With Love is Service Serving The Community Since 1888
Established in 1888, St. Joseph's Hospital, Manjummel, is Kerala's first mission hospital and the second in India. Owned and administered by the Carmelite Fathers of Manjummel Province, it has grown significantly over 134 years. Initially managed by the Carmelite Fathers, the Archdiocese of Verapoly oversaw its administration from 1962 to 1992, after which it returned to Carmelite management. A major facelift in 2005 enhanced its services, making it a leading healthcare institution. Committed to innovation, patient care, medical research, and outreach, the hospital fulfills the vision of its founder, Dr. Bro. Nicholas Verouvan TOCD, to serve all, regardless of caste or creed, as a place of healing and refuge in the name of Jesus and the Carmelite Order.

Chairman
Chairman's Message
We the management and staffs of St. Joseph’s hospital, Manjummel are ordained to fulfill the dream, and vision of our founder Dr. Bro. Nicholas Verouvan TOCD. A dream of serving the suffering and needy and a vision to be a prominent community member known for meeting the healthcare needs of the entire community through incomparable patient care in the name of Jesus and the Carmelite Order. Bro. Nicholas wished that St. Joseph’s hospital be a refuge for people of all caste and creed where everyone is well and happy. The most famous prayer of our Indian civilization: Loka Samasta Sukihino Bhavantu’ [i.e. May all the beings around the world be happy] reveals both the mentality and prayer of Brother. We all need to pray and strive to maintain a sound mind and a healthy body. Taking the effort to do so keeps the mind alert and active. May God satisfy our desires with good things and wait upon the Lord so that our strenght be renewed like eagles mount up with wings, to run and not be weary and to walk and not faint.
